A search engine is a web based tool to search various types of information on World Wide Web.
With the help of search engine we can find out any information from all web pages easily.
Example :- Google , Microsoft-Bing, Yahoo , Mozilla-Firefox etc.

A search engine works with the help of three basic elements :
1. Spiders or Web crawler or Bots or Agents
2. Indexing software and database
3. Search algorithm
1. Spiders or Web crawler or Bots or Agents
It is a software which comb the internet for documents and their web addresses or URL. The spiders are given direction by the search engine and they crawl from one server to another.
2. Indexing software and database
The lists of documents and web addresses collected by bots are sent to the indexing software . The indexing software extracts information from the documents and websites , prepare and index and make a database.
3. Search algorithm
When we search by engineering keywords the search engine software searches its database using a particular search method called search algorithm . Then it displays the matching documents or web addresses on a web page.

1. Spiders comb the net, collect the documents and web addresses, and send them to search engines indexing software.
2. Indexing software extracts information from the documents and stores it in a database.
3. From this database using a search algorithm, the search engine assemble a web page, displaying the matching results as hyperlinks.

Search engines can be used efficiently by the art of framing search queries . For this, some tips are given below :

1. Do not ask questions for example " who is the finance minister of India? " the search engine will search the match of each word.
2. Use quotes or punctuation marks in your queries for example to search " God of small things " , a book written by Arundhati Roy. you may write it as " God of small things " or God-of-small-things or God;of;small;things.
3. Use asterisk for pattern matching . For example, if you want to search for things starting with "dir" then you may write - dir*.
Your search engine may give you dire , direct , direction , directive, dirty etc.
4. The lowercase word matches are not case sensitive but uppercase words are case sensitive.
5. Use a + sign for example "Delhi+University" will match both words Delhi and University.
6. Put a " - " sign for a word to not appear. for example Asia -China.
your search engine may give you information about Asia, in which China will not be present.
